What is a Work Residence Card?
The Temporary Work Residence Card (karta pobytu czasowego i pracy) is one of the most popular and sought-after ways for foreign nationals to legalize their stay in Poland. It allows you to live legally in the country while officially working under a valid employment contract.
This document confirms your legal residence in Poland and eliminates the need for frequent visa renewals. For this reason, the work residence card is considered an optimal solution for those planning long-term employment and stable residence in the country.
Who Can Obtain a Work Residence Card?
A foreigner can apply for a Temporary Work Residence Card if they meet the following requirements:
  • they have a valid employment contract or umowa zlecenie;
  • they perform work on the territory of Poland;
  • they have an employer willing to provide the necessary documents, including Załącznik nr 1;
  • they are actually residing in Poland at the time of application.

These conditions confirm the foreigner’s connection to the Polish labor market and form the basis for a successful card application.

What a Work Residence Card Provides?
Legal life and employment in Poland
A holder of a work residence card gains the ability to:
  • legally reside in Poland for the entire duration of the card;
  • officially work for the employer specified in the voivodeship office’s decision;
  • benefit from the protection of Polish labor law, including guarantees of safe working conditions, timely payment, and the observance of employee rights.

This makes the work residence card a reliable basis for stable residence and long-term employment in Poland.

Freedom of Movement Access to Social Programs and Healthcare
A temporary residence card provides extended travel opportunities:
  • multiple entries and exits across the Polish and Schengen borders without additional permits;
  • the ability to return to Poland without applying for a new visa;
  • travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

This is convenient for business trips, tourism, and visiting relatives in Europe.

Access to Social Programs and Healthcare
If your employer registers you with the ZUS system, you gain:
  • access to the state health insurance (NFZ);
  • the right to free medical treatment, doctor visits, and healthcare services;
  • the ability to benefit from social programs, including the monthly child allowance 800+ (formerly 500+) for each child.

These benefits make a foreigner’s stay in Poland safe and socially protected.
